Synopsis[]

Ginger, Dodie, and Macie agree on doing a skit devoted to The Little Seal Girl, their childhood hero, for the school talent show. Ginger and Dodie, however, quickly become convinced that it's too juvenile and back out. Macie feels betrayed and goes solo. Meanwhile, Carl touches a mummified hand of his teacher's that is supposedly cursed.

Recap[]

It's time for the annual Lucky Junior High talent show and Dodie really wants she, Ginger, and Macie to win. The three girls agree to enter and win the trophy. Miranda and Courtney plan to enter as well, but Miranda sees an opportunity to remove Ginger from Courtney's radar. She suggests that Ginger join Courtney's group for the show. Courtney pulls Ginger aside and asks her to join, but Ginger declines, saying she already agreed to perform with her friends. Courtney is offended at being rejected, and angrily leaves with Miranda.

Later, Ginger, Dodie, and Macie plan their act. They decide to perform a dance to the "Little Seal Girl" theme song. Ginger is still down about "rejecting" Courtney. Dodie reassures her, saying that one of their Best Friend Traditions (BFT) is performing in the talent show together, and once Courtney sees them on stage, she will understand how important it is to Ginger.

Later, Ginger's family has dinner. Carl keeps talking about disgusting things, and Lois tries getting Ginger to change the subject. But, Carl brings up something disgusting and important: Mrs. Gordon is bringing a mummified hand in to class. Allegedly, the hand is cursed, and whoever touches it will be stricken with misfortune. Ginger, who had Mrs. Gordon before and knows about the hand, denies it.

The following day at school, Dodie and Ginger discuss fine points of their dance. Courtney and Miranda enter and ask how their planning is going. Ginger tries to apologize to Courtney, but Dodie interrupts by talking about their planned skit. After Dodie and Ginger show off the fins of their costumes, Courtney and Miranda feel embarrassed for the other girls, then leave laughing. After school, Ginger and Dodie think their intended song may be too immature to perform and want to change acts. Macie then arrives in a full Seal Girl costume. Ginger and Dodie watch her dance for a moment, then suggest doing a different routine. Macie gets upset, as she had her heart set on doing the original act. She says that Little Seal Girl has been a major part of the trio's lives for years, and can't believe Dodie and Ginger won't join her.

The next day at the elementary school, Carl and Hoodsey see Mrs. Gordon entering the school with a small box. Their classmates crowd around Mrs. Gordon, but Carl and Hoodsey clear a path to the classroom for her. Mrs. Gordon puts the box into her desk, and worries that the hand is causing too much excitement. Carl tries convincing her that he and Hoodsey will safeguard the hand. Mrs. Gordon declines, knowing Carl will try to touch it. But, when another student alerts her that she needs to move her car out of the principal's spot, she asks Carl and Hoodsey to guard the hand. She warns Carl again to not touch it, then leaves. Carl immediately opens the box, pulls out the mummified hand, and holds it in a handshake. The index finger falls off, and Carl decides to discreetly take the hand to the doghouse to fix it. He goes to store the hand in his locker, but trips and drops it, causing the middle finger to break off.

Ginger and Dodie try convincing Macie to switch acts for the talent show, by performing a tap dance. Ginger insists that the new routine is cooler. Macie, still mad, says that she is not concerned with looking "cool," and will perform the Seal Girl dance without them. Meanwhile, Carl and Hoodsey try to sew the broken fingers back onto the hand, but the skin is too thick for the needle. Carl opts to glue the fingers back on instead.

At the middle school, Dodie is upset that the trio won't be performing in the show together. Ginger suggests that she and Dodie volunteer as curtain pullers on the night of the show, so they can still participate. The two of them go to the auditorium, where Courtney, Miranda, and the other popular girls are practicing their routine, a synchronized roller-skating dance to Courtney's World. They stop to take a break, and Mipsy says that their group will definitely win compared to the other contestants. Lonnie adds that Macie is going to make a fool of herself. Ginger and Dodie decide to take the job as curtain pullers, so if and when people start laughing at Macie, they can cut her act short and spare her the embarrassment.

Carl and Hoodsey stash the mummified hand in Mrs. Gordon's desk before class starts. Hoodsey is unsure about the plan, but Mrs. Gordon enters the room. The boys quickly leave while she takes the hand out to check on it. She can see that the first two fingers have been sloppily glued onto the hand, and she yells at Carl to come back.

Finally, it is time for the talent show to begin. The audience starts taking their seats. Lois, Carl, and Hoodsey sit up front, but Carl's seat immediately breaks. Carl worries that he is actually suffering the hand's curse. The show starts, and the MC, Chet Zipper, warms up the audience with a stand-up routine. Ginger goes to Courtney to wish her luck on her performance. Courtney asks why Ginger isn't participating, and Ginger says the reason is pretty silly. A few acts later, Courtney's group performs. The girls skate around the stage, dressed like Courtney, and Courtney herself bursts through a massive self-portrait for the finale. The crowd loves the performance.

Up next is Macie. Ginger and Dodie stand ready at the curtain rope. Macie goes on stage, and the Little Seal Girl song starts playing from a stereo. People start to laugh as Macie starts her dance. Just then, the stereo breaks down, and destroys the tape playing the song. Macie freezes for a moment, and Ginger and Dodie prepare to pull the rope. But, Macie starts to sing the rest of the song. As she continues, she sings with more passion, and the crowd seems to be into it. Courtney even admits there is something endearing about Macie's performance. Macie finishes the song, and gets a thunderous applause from the audience. Ginger and Dodie cheer from backstage.

At the end of the show, the winner is announced. To everyone's surprise, Macie takes home the trophy. Afterwards, Macie heads backstage to take off her costume. Ginger and Dodie enter the dressing room and congratulate Macie. Macie apologizes to her friends for breaking their tradition. The other two forgive Macie and they all share a group hug. The three of them leave with the trophy in hand as Courtney and Miranda come in. Courtney asks why she and Miranda don't hug. Miranda doesn't want to, but Courtney wraps her arms around her reluctant friend anyway, ending the episode on an awkward note.

Quotes[]

(In the middle of Macie's performance...) Courtney: Miranda, is it me, or is there something terribly endearing about her?

Ginger: Break a leg, Courtney.
Miranda: Ha, you wish.
Courtney: So how come your not in the talent show, Ginger? I thought it was a "B-L-T."
Ginger: It's kind of a long story, but I guess the reason is pretty silly.

Dodie: When Courtney sees just how great our act is, she'll understand this BFT is a really special one and she'll forget all about being mad at you.
Ginger: You really think so?
Macie: Nope, but denial can be a great healer.

Dodie and Ginger: (waving their hands with fins on them) Cha!
Courtney: I'm feeling a very unfamiliar emotion again, Miranda.
Miranda: I think you may be embarrassed for them. I know I am.

Macie: Seal Girl lives on!

Macie: Do I look like a girl who's concerned with what's cool?

Trivia[]

  • If you look closely in the scene where Macie throws the flipper, in the crowd of girls who catch it, you can see some familiar faces: Hope, Darren, and Jean-Pierre.
  • Lyrics to Little Seal Girl: Most folks think that I'm not real 'cause I'm half girl and I'm half seal. I'm a little seal girl living in the real world and it's so hard to get by 'cause seals can't even cry. But in this endless, boundless sea is there no one who looks like me? I know I must stay chipper one day I'll find a friend to hold my flipper 'cause I'm a little seal girl living in the real world and it's so hard to get by 'cause seals can't even cry.
  • During Macie's musical number, she throws off one of her flippers, but she's wearing them both when she picks up her trophy.
  • It is unknown where the music was coming from during Macie's performance after the cassette tape was ruined.
