Deirdre Hortense "Dodie" Bishop is an ultimate chatterbox and recycled gossip authority and has been Ginger's best friend since second grade along with Macie Lightfoot.

History[]

Dodie appears in the pilot episode, The Party but makes her official debut in the first episode of series. Dodie always has the latest news on the student body at hand and is possibly the most desperate for popularity (and for that reason the least likely to get it). Still, the knowledge she has about her peers is impressive: Dodie can tell you the exact shade of lipstick each of the popular girls wear, why it does or doesn't work for them, and what each of them is best known for. Other than that, Dodie loves slumber parties and has been known to be somewhat of a drama queen.

Personality[]

Dodie is usually a good person and friend to Ginger and Macie. She is loyal to the two but does suffer terrible jealousy and selfishness whenever their friendship appears to be coming apart due to outside forces. During those times, she will try to keep their friendship in tact however she can, at times having to use underhanded methods.

Dodie craves attention, especially from the popular students at school, specifically Courtney Gripling. Because of this, she often does whatever she can to become more popular which causes Dodie to sometimes do terrible things in order to achieve her goal. Such things include telling Ginger's secrets to Miranda, reading the Lice Report during the morning announcements in hopes of becoming famous, faking injuries to become an official cheerleader, and more.

Because of her constant attention seeking, Dodie often dislikes when things do not go her way and will either constantly complain about it or act out her own type of revenge. During the times she is called out for wanting everything her way, she will either tune it out or completely deny it.

She does become a little more mature during the series and is seen being rather hands on when involved in projects she's passionate about. Although she shows great dedication, she often goes overboard and attempts to place herself in charge of things which brings out her bossy side.

During middle school, Dodie was seen as a constant blabbermouth of other people's secrets and business, and always needing to know the latest gossip. Upon entering high school, she has calmed down a bit regarding these issues as she focuses much of her attention in trying to become part of the pep squad.

Appearance[]

Dodie has dirty blonde hair down to her neck that is curled in at the bottom. She has long, bigger, purple lips. In seasons 1-2, Dodie wears her hair in pigtails, but starting in season 3, for high school, she wears it down. Dodie dresses in a preppy style and wears some stripes or some plaid and bright clothes. She is always shown to wear earrings that are two studs connected.

Relationships[]

Family[]

  • Joann Bishop: Dodie doesn't have a close relationship with her mother, though over time they do develop a bit of a bond. Dodie is similar to other teens in that she finds her mother embarrassing and tries to avoid being around her in public if possible. However, similar to Ginger covering for Carl's antics, Dodie does the same when Joann is too intense around others. While she loves her mother, Dodie continues to struggle forming a close relationship with her.
  • Robert Joseph "Hoodsey" Bishop: Hoodsey is Dodie's younger brother. They share a typical sibling relationship where Dodie considers him to be an annoyance, but they still have love for each other. Just like Ginger's relationship with Carl, Dodie struggles to keep her brother under control at times but does care about his well-being.
  • David Charles Bishop: Dodie and her father both love each other and have a good relationship. They are both able to talk to each other about their problems.
  • Nana Bishop: Dodie and her grandmother were very close while she was growing up. When her Nana died, Dodie was shown to have taken it rather hard but found herself feeling better after sharing stories with Ginger and Macie.

Friends[]

  • Ginger Foutley: She and Ginger are the best of friends. Their friendship has seen some ups and downs, but in the end they make up and remain best friends. Despite their close friendship, Dodie does not like it when Ginger strays from "traditions" the three of them have formed from the start of their friendship and will usually complain about it before acting out a petty payback. However, Dodie tends to realize how selfish she was and offers her apology.
  • Macie Lightfoot: She is her other best friend. Due to Macie being the most timid and squeamish of the group, Dodie tries to help her friend overcome these issues but finds Macie too set in her ways to change much. Because Macie is the least likely to stand her ground on an issue, Dodie will sometimes use this to her advantage by getting Macie to join her side.
  • Darren Patterson: He is her nice guy friend. While they get along very well most of the time, Dodie does not like it when he calls her out for always wanting things her way. She also saw him as part of the problem when Ginger started paying more attention to him after she returned from Avalanche Arts.

Teachers[]

  • Miss. Zorski: She is in her homeroom class. She doesn't interact with Ms. Zorski very much, but she is a good student.

Romance[]

  • Chet Zipper: Chet is a mellow boy whom Dodie really likes. He reads the announcements for the school and has a monotone voice. At the school dance, the two were dancing uncomfortably with each other, but this was their first time dancing with each other. Later, the pair are married and have an infant daughter closely resembling Dodie.

Others[]

  • Courtney Gripling: She wants to be like her. Early in the series, Dodie admired her popularity. She would try to do things that Courtney did to become popular. As the series progressed, Courtney started to be in her circle of friends. In About Face, she stood up to Courtney and the popular girls when they came to her house to talk about her mother's persona Josie.
  • Margie: She became a counselor in training under her wing in Season of Caprice. When her cabin broke 14 rules, Margie took away her whistle and permanently suspended the girls. However, the girls stood up for themselves and Margie changed her mind.
  • Coach CandaceAs Dodie tried to get on the squad, she would often do things for Coach Candace in order to fulfill her goal. She ultimately got rejected once Candace found she was pretending be hurt. Ginger convinced her to reconsider and she gave Dodie a fair chance. Dodie ended getting hurt for real and Candace would let her try out next time.
  • Simone: The head cheerleader of the pep squad. Because of Simone's status, Dodie constantly kisses up to her similarly to how she had with Courtney. However, Dodie doesn't give her complete loyalty to Simone as she will occasionally draw the line when concerns regarding Ginger are brought up.

Trivia[]

  • Dodie can be insensitive and egotistical at times, but at the end of the day, she cares about her friendship with Ginger, Macie, and Darren.
  • As she makes the transition from middle school to high school, Dodie's quest for popularity begins to diminish a bit as she switches from wanting to be part of Courtney's inner circle to wanting to be part of the pep squad who are considered some of the most popular girls in the entire school.
  • According to Dodie in "Losing Nana Bishop", her grandmother is the one responsible for Dodie's iconic pigtail look.
  • In the pilot episode Dodie tells Ginger that she, Macie and Ginger were best friends ever since kindergarten but in one of the episodes she said that she’s known Ginger since second grade.
  • Dodie shares many traits with Dijonay from Disney’s The Proud Family. Most noted by fans is how both girls constantly betray their best friend in order to get what they want while assuming to expect no consequences; of which is mostly true as Ginger and Penny constantly forgive their friend's antics despite how damaging some of their actions are.
