Joaquin Cortez is a transfer student at Lucky Jr. High.

History[]

At the beginning of Love With a Proper Transfer Student, Dodie notices him during lunch. She develops a crush on him. However, Mipsy walks past her and says she wants to be with him. Mipsy goes over to sit by Joaquin while he gives her an uninterested look. After lunch, Joaquin looks at a billboard for the school musical "Mambo in the Catskills". Ginger goes over to the billboard and signs Dodie's name. Joaquin asks Ginger if she's auditioning and calls her Dodie. Ginger corrects him and says she's not Dodie and gives a nervous response. She then writes her name on the board and Joaquin says he'll see her there.

The next day at school, Joaquin is auditioning for the play with Mipsy. After they both read their lines, Ms. Zorski gives Joaquin a good compliment. She advises Mipsy to play Ellie's mother in the play. She asks Joaquin to stay on the stage and calls Dodie up to audition with him. After Dodie reads her lines, Ms. Zorski asks to read with Ginger. The two of them smiled at each other after reading their lines. After finding out that Joaquin is playing Ronnie and Ginger is playing Ellie, he says he'll see her at rehearsal. Ginger says she can't wait.

At the rehearsal, Joaquin offers Ginger to audition in the dressing room. Ginger asks him what his favorite color, band, class and food are. He responds by saying midnight blue, The Wetheads, English Literature and potato chip chicken casserole. Ginger says those are all of her favorite things as well. She catches herself and says those are Dodie's favorite things. Ms. Zorski says she wants Ginger and Joaquin to rehearse the gazebo scene. Ginger is hesitant because their characters share a kiss in that scene. Ms. Zorski says there won't be a kiss until opening night which leaves Ginger and Dodie relieved.

As they are rehearsing, Ms. Zorski wants them to do it one more time. As Ginger and Joaquin read their lines, they share a passionate kiss. This leaves Dodie and Macie surprised. The next day at school, Joaquin goes over to Ginger so they can run their lines. As they read their lines in the dressing room, Joaquin leans forward for another kiss but Ginger refuses. Joaquin thought she felt the same way about her like he does. Ginger tells him relationships come and go but best friends are forever. He asks why Ginger is quoting a greeting card. Ginger later sees Dodie outside and she heard what she said to Joaquin. The two of them made up.
